Posted October 13, 2010. I have recently been involved in a debate about the merits or otherwise of using or not using a WDH with the McHitch coupling. There has been some urgency because our new van will be ready for pick-up next week and the 4.75T coupling we wanted will not be available until about the middle of 2011.

Willie I have had a lot of trouble getting my McHitch to release on this trip. It is stuck so hard, I have to jack it up with the Trail-a-Mate, then I have to use my bottle jack to jack up the hitch as close as I can get to the pin. At first I thought it was a McHitch problem, but now I have changed my mind.

I do not have a McHitch but from some research I did I found the main negative was that the hitch moved the trailer coupling pivot point further from the C/L of the rear axle which in some circumstances may increase instability in the combination of trailer and tow vehicle. __________________

McHitch was a good hitch for lazy people with light vans, but those who have any understanding of weights and dynamics would never use one with a heavy van behind a lighter vehicle. Increased TBO multiplies the weight applied to the car's rear axle by towball weight, as well as increasing the dangerous effects of yaw.

Mate just get it close, push down on the front of the screw head and lower the jockey wheel it goes on first time every time. Willing to help anyone, just don't try to hard. :thumbsup: Ps: Mate as to McHitch acknowledging a problem and modifying, the only modification I am aware of is they put a 45 degree chamfer on the locking tabs making it easier to locate.

Hooked up the van and went for a test run today for 50km on good and bad roads (without WDH) and to say the least I'm impressed and it wins my tick of approval.

The word is that McHitch, a small business making IMO great off-road trailer couplings who were located in part of what used to be the Lithgow Small Arms Factory have ceased to be in business. McHitch have not offered any explanation as to why they have closed down. I will be buying a spare unit while they are still available.
